It’s been a rough day for the Surrey Fire Department.
Acting Assistant Chief Craig Leighton says the calls coming in reporting fire and smoke have skyrocketed since this time last year.
“We’ve had sixty calls that are related to these types of fires, and that was at noon in a twelve-hour period. When I checked the stats from last year, the same period of time on the same day, we had had one call.”
Leighton says it’s a straight forward message.
A number of fires that they’ve had to dealt with today were carelessly started.
People can prevent them by making sure they don’t toss their cigarettes out of car windows.
And instead extinguish them in an ashtray or wet them with water so they don’t start a fire.
