The District of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island is under a State of Local Emergency.
Mayor Hank Bood says the situation is under control – what matters is making sure everyone in the area is safe.
“That isn’t because we’ve got structures that are burning or people that have been injured. It’s because we’ve needed to evacuate people and that causes the District to run up costs that the province looks after when you declare a state of emergency.”
Bood says no one has been injured by the fires.
The fire was first spotted Friday evening at around 7:00.
It quickly grew to six hectares. Stong winds are fueling it. About 20-30 homes are in the fire’s direct path, 100 more are in the general vicinity.
Equipment is on its way to help fight the fire. Some fire retardant that was dropped, and has held back the fire from the town.
