The United States has recorded its first death from the measles in 12 years.
A woman died in the Port Angeles area, northwest of Seattle. It’s the first measles death in that state since 1990.
“She died in the spring and had an undetected case of measles that was discovered upon autopsy,” says Donn Moyer with the state department of health. “We were notified with the autopsy result that she had died from measles.”
Moyer says there was a measles outbreak in the area where the woman lived around the time of her death.
She was one of six people who contracted the virus.
She had underlying health issues, which Moyer says is a reminder that vaccinations protect other people — not just you.
