City crews put fencing up around the Vancouver Art Gallery Monday night before construction gets underway, but that isn’t preventing thousands of pot activists from descending into the grounds for their annual Canada Day smoke up.
Cannabis Day organizer Jeremiah Vandermeer has this to say.
“Starting fairly early in the morning, many of us will be assembling at the south side of the Vancouver Art Gallery, for our Cannabis day protest. This will be the 20th anniversary. There is going to be a lot of people again, we imagine, starting at high noon, that is when the speakers and music starts, that will be until 6pm.”
City Manager Penny Ballem says while officials don’t support the unsanctioned event, the city isn’t trying to retaliate.
“No this is not anything to do with, anything other than we are behind the eight ball getting this thing fixed, and we only have a certain weather window to actually do it.”
Vancouver Police will be on hand and could seize property if public safety is put at risk.
