It’s not even July yet, but BC is about to burn through it’s wildfire budget, thanks to an unusually early and dry summer.
“We currently have 96 active wildfires in the province. So that is a high number of fires for this time of year. Last year, relatively speaking, we had 25 fires.”
Provincial Fire Information Officer Navi Saini says it’s been a challenge for crews battling wildfires.
As of Sunday, those wildfires have consumed 62.9 of 63 million dollars budgeted for the year.
And there’s more to come.
“Conditions out there are very hot and dry, and again with the weather, no significant break in the foreseeable future.”
Saini says the squeeze won’t change anything on the ground.
“We are always willing to spend whatever it takes to protect life and property. Safety is our number one priority.”
With lightning in the forecast for many areas of BC tomorrow — and a major holiday this week — officials are warning people to be extra vigilant and report any fire sightings.
