Closing arguments have started at the Vancouver trial in which 2010 Olympic boss John Furlong is accused of defamation by journalist Laura Robinson.
Her lawyer Bryan Baynham says she was repeatedly threatened with legal action as she researched her 2012 article suggesting Furlong abused former First Nations students at a private Catholic school in Burns Lake more than 40 years earlier.
He says Furlong falsely accused Robinson of being a ‘gotcha’ writer who targeted him because he was a ‘male authority.’
Furlong’s lawyer John Hunter is expected to argue anything his client said in reaction to the story which destroyed his reputation is fair comment.
The judge has already said her ruling will be reserved.
