Sunday is a big day for women’s soccer in Vancouver as Canada hosts Switzerland in an elimination game.
Manager of Vancouver United Football Club Keith Ryan says knowing that such famous role models and women athletes would be in the city motivated the club’s female players this season.
“It’s really amazing to see young girls in a sport that is such a great fit for them athletically as well. You see the standard of the women’s games which is why you see now 55,000 people going out to watch women’s soccer. Isn’t that great?”
FIFA has been in contact with Soccer Clubs around the city, and has invited young female players to be flag bearers at most of the games.
“We had an early opportunity to get involved with FIFA, we had them out to our Spring Break camps and they took some videos there, and our young girls were part of the FIFA video for their congress. They were probably 9 year olds on the FIFA congress video.”
The match between Canada and Switzerland starts at 4:30 PM local time.
