Two university students in New Brunswick are hoping to use fashion to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness.
Clothing produced by Wear Your Label feature words of encouragement like “Self care isn’t selfish” and “Sick not weak.”
Wear Your Label co-founder Kayley Reed says the idea started when she realized how hard it was to talk about her own struggles with mental illness.
“One of my favourite stories I’ve gotten is of a father who bought a sweater for his daughter to start a conversation with his daughter about self esteem and body image issues. Because he knew she might be struggling with something but he didn’t really know how to talk to her about it. So he used our clothing as that conversation starter.”
“We wanted to create something that unites both those people who are struggling and having a hard time and also those people who are supporters and want to be advocates.”
10% of their profits go back to mental health initiatives in their community.
