That from the provincial government, after Surrey’s Mayor suggested Monday that gangsters injured in gunfire should pay back their own medical costs.
Linda Hepner suggests using civil forfeiture legislation to force those involved in criminal activity to pay back their costs to the health care system.
But a statement from the Ministry of Justice says the Civil Forfeiture Act involves taking action against property, and not people, and in the scenario described by the mayor, the act would not apply.
The suggestion comes after more gun violence plagues the streets of Surrey related to a low-level drug-trade turf war.
Police say more than 50 charges have been laid in connection with 34 shootings in Surrey and Delta since March.
