Little Saigon. Punjabi Market. Little Italy?
That’s the goal of an upcoming motion by NPA councillor Melissa De Genova – who wants to see a part of Commercial Drive get the cultural designation.
“Naming a portion of the street Little Italy – I don’t think it really changes what’s here today. So I’m not proposing change, I’m proposing recognition for the Italian community.”
She says the idea would be to have city staff consult with the neighbourhood to choose a few blocks to get the name.
It’s an idea that was popular with attendees at the Italian Day festival.
“Well, judging by today, sounds like a good idea. I’m okay with it, yes, yeah. Great idea. I think it’s always been known as a gathering place for the Italian community.”
The motion goes before council June 23rd.
