“Immigrant youth are dealing with racism and this is one way they fight back is by joining gangs.”
Various groups representing the African community in the Surrey and Delta area gathered this afternoon to discuss issues stemming from the recent run of youth and gang violence.
Like various South Asian groups preached at an earlier forum in April, Imtiaz Popat says education is needed for the African community to curb the violence.
“And we need more resources to have counselling for parents. We know there have been deaths in the community so we need resources to get education and more support for the community.”
“It’s not a quick fix, but if we don’t put resources into these communities, the problems will continue and get worse.”
Somali and South Asian gangs have been embroiled in a drug turf war since the beginning of March which has seen over 30 shootings.
