Sasamat’s Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a ground fire that happened around 3:00 pm Saturday on Hamber Island.
It ended up burning about a third of the island.
Jay Sharpe with the detachment says thankfully no one was injured…
“…but there are a number of houses that are close by and the smoke and the embers from the fires were blowing towards the houses. So some of the residents were obviously very concerned, but the crews…knocked it down.”
Residents are back at home tonight.
Sharpe says the fire was likely human caused.
At this point in their investigation, it looks like a campfire was not put out properly.
“This is our second wildfire event in the last couple of weeks. Both seem to be human caused. And just wanna urge people to exercise extreme caution, and to obviously not have fires where you’re not supposed to.”
Campfires are currently not allowed on the island.
