After six serious falls in just six days, the head of the trauma program at BC Children’s Hospital is warning parents to secure windows and balcony doors.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Ash Singhal says kids who fall from a height get far more than just a bump on the head: “Hemorrhages in the brain, fractures of the skull, fractures of the face and smashes of the jaw and upper face.
“They can sometimes have chest injuries and they can have internal bleeding into their chest or into their abdomens.”
He says the kids injured this past week fortunately survived, but some remain in hospital.
Singhal says they usually see about 20 falls like this in a year, so six already is a lot.
