Downtown Vancouver is saying goodbye to an icon.
After 17 years, the flagship Chapters location at Robson and Howe will be closing its doors for the last time.
The shelves were half bare – but there was no shortage of shoppers looking to score on heavily discounted books.
For many, it was a nostalgia tinged day.
“We used to meet here — we used to browse here. And my daughter really grew up here. I don’t have the heart to tell her chapters is closing,” said one shopper.
But while many said they were sad to see the store go – others said it was just a sign of the times.
“I don’t know – like, I don’t believe print is dead by any means, but I think yeah, with things like the Kindle, and I mean, I have an iPad in my bag that I read off of.”
“I’d say it’s just more indicative of the economic climate in this area.”
“I think everything is moving online, and stores like this are inevitably going to start to become more and more scarce.”
Chapters’ other South Granville Vancouver store will be re-branding as an Indigo.
And the Iconic Downtown location? Soon to be home to a SportChek.
