“I’m a little concerned that the mayor has become singularly focused on one solution, which is flapping some sort of speculator’s tax, as if somehow that would be a magic bullet to solving affordability.”
Jordan Bateman with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, who says instead of implementing a proposed speculation tax, Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson and others should understand their own contribution to high housing prices in the city.
“What I would really like to see is the Premier, and frankly the federal government as well, and of course the municipal government’s looking in the mirror, taking a look at their own tax and regulatory regime and asking themselves if they’re part of the problem here.”
“You definitely can’t tax people more, because that just compounds the issue of unaffordability.”
Speaking with Marcella Bernardo on The Sean Leslie Show, Bateman suggests a full review of the City of Vancouver’s housing tax and regulation scheme are needed.
