On the eve of what’s being hyped as a Stanley Cup Final classic, this is the time of year when the word “legacy” tends to get thrown around a lot.
It’s almost hard to believe he’s still only 27, but the legacy of one Jonathan Toews is becoming alarmingly incredible.
Even before “Captain Serious” helped propel his Blackhawks club into the 2015 Stanley Cup Final with a monster two-goal, first period performance in Game 7 last Saturday, the accolades to his name were already something to behold.
The youngest captain in NHL history. Stanley Cups in 2010 and 2013. Olympic Gold Medals in 2010 and 2014. World Junior Hockey gold. World Hockey Championship Gold.
And even if you look past the hardware, a glance at his performances in crucial games is impressive.
2010’s Canadian Olympic gold medal game: Toews scores. 2014’s gold medal game: Toews scores. Three different Game 7’s against the Canucks, Kings, and Ducks… well, you know.
There may not be a player today that I would want on my hockey team for a Game 7 more than Jonathan Toews, and that’s coming from a list which has the likes of Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk, and his upcoming Stanley Cup Final opponent, Steven Stamkos.
Quite simply, Toews is unstoppable. And it’s the reason why I’ve got no problems putting my Stanley Cup prediction on the Chicago Blackhawks.
Captain Serious? Trademark his name to Captain Clutch.
