A fourth baby killer whale has been spotted off the B.C. coast.
Whale watchers reported seeing the calf, L-121, Monday afternoon off Tofino.
Michael Harris with the Pacific Whale Watchers Association says he’s seen photos of the new baby, saying it appears “very healthy.”
“The southern resident community did not have a successful birth for almost three years, and this is among the entire population. But we’ve had somewhat of a baby boom here. Since December 30th, we’ve had four babies born within J, K and L pods.”
Harris says if just two of the four calves live to be a year old, the endangered southern resident whale population will have much better chances of survival and growth.
