The last article 50-year-old Ross Chafe and 53-year-old Kelly Blunden posted to their Facebook pages before the tragic accident was how cyclists can stay safe while biking in groups.
The Vice President of the Whistler Cycling Club, Gary Baker says the two experienced cyclists were riding with a third friend close to Pemberton when they were hit by a car.
“Two of them were a little faster than the third guy, and he heard a bang…he saw what had happened and it was just unbelievable, because Kelly was his best friend.”
Baker says Chaffe was planning a trip to Ireland to go cycling, and Blunden had created beginners biking class with the club.
“When something goes wrong in Whistler, everyone kind of steps up to the plate. They’ll be missed for sure.”
The passenger in the car involved, 52-year-old Paul Maurice Pierre Jr was also killed in the crash.
RCMP believe alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
The driver remains in hospital and has not yet been charged.
