BC’s Health Minister says his ministry is working with the Fraser Health Authority to deal with a shortage of nurses in Surrey Memorial Hospital’s maternity ward.
Nurses there say expecting moms are being put at risk.
Terry Lake says it’s working with the BC Nurses Union to hire more nurses.
“One of the key areas is specialist nursing, and I think the area of pediatrics is one of them.”
He says the government has invested five million dollars into a special fund to increase training for specialized nursing.
“I understand Fraser Health has 10 nurses that are ready to move into that area at Surrey Memorial.”
Nurses in that unit say they are burnt out, with 14 scheduled for the night shift, instead of the required 21.
