Vancouver Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi says he’s not surprised by two major developments in international soccer.
Seven FIFA officials have been arrested in a US corruption investigation going back decades, while prosecutors in Switzerland say they’ve “opened criminal proceedings” in the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, respectively.
“I do believe … that it is good for the game because it almost has become an acceptance that that’s just the way FIFA operates. They appear to be insulated from what goes on in the real world, but in actuality, in the outcome of today, that doesn’t appear to be the case, thankfully.”
Speaking with CKNW’s Jon McComb, Lenarduzzi thinks Friday’s election of FIFA’s president should be delayed.
