Former hockey player Sheldon Kennedy is hoping the latest charges laid against his junior coach result in more prison time for convicted pedophile Graham James.
“Punishment has to match the crime and I think we’re getting there on that front. We’re the only country in the world that actually has these issues under a health mandate. See, it’s not just the police’s job.”
Kennedy, who was abused when he played for the Swift Current Broncos, says he came forward in 1997 because he couldn’t stand seeing James with children.
“You know, to hear another individual come forward, I’m not surprised. Where my emotions go when I hear of this immediately goes to the individual that came forward and that they know that they’re not alone anymore. There’s people that can help.”
Kennedy adds he’s not surprised more charges have been laid against the now-62 year old James because police investigating his case told him there could be up to 100 victims.
We later learned one of the others was former NHL star Theo Fleury… who was abused when he played for the Moose Jaw Warriors.
The new charges stem from an RCMP complaint filed in 2013, but also dating back to the 1990’s.
