There is a conversation taking place between the New England Patriots and the NFL…the conversation is about compromise, and it might be the first smart thing that either side has done in this turd tossing contest that spawned from Deflate Gate.
After another week of bad publicity, the two sides are allegedly back channeling efforts to reach a resolution that would quietly put this controversy to bed for everyone, including Quarterback Tom Brady, who remains quiet on the whole fiasco.
His silence speaks volumes. Did Brady have Don Yee speak for him last week, impugning the integrity of lawyer Ted Wells in the process, perhaps he did. A resolution to this dispute that takes place behind closed doors allows everyone to tie this controversy off.
For Brady, he doesn’t have to take ownership of the situation if his suspension is reduced or perhaps even rescinded for a fine. He can also say that Yee acted on his own and was only trying to protect his client. The Pats get their star QB back, take a quarter million dollar fine, knock down the draft pick penalty a little and admit that they could have done more to not put themselves in this situation.
Someone has to own this…and it will be the equipment guys Jastremski and McNally, who will for certain be given a golden parachute payday complete with a non-disclosure clause to walk away gracefully.
This item will be swept away in yesterday’s news clippings and then raise its head momentarily when the Patriots begin their season and when they play the Colts. That will be it and further damage will have been prevented.
Damage control plain and simple, and these tools should have thought of that a long time ago.
The initials NFL has stood for a great many things over the past number of years…recently ‘Nothing but Fools League’ has been apropos.
Perhaps a resolution to this latest mess will allow the league to focus on the game of football instead of the PSI…
