Vancouver 0 – Seattle 2 (Barrett 2)
The Seattle Sounders used two first half goals by Chad Barrett and an excellent defensive display in the 2nd half as they beat Vancouver 2-0 Saturday afternoon at BC Place. The Whitecaps did generate a number of chances towards goal but other than a 7th minute tip over the bar on a Pedro Morales shot, rarely tested Seattle keeper Stefan Frei.
The Vancouver Whitecaps hosted the Seattle Sounders Saturday afternoon at BC Place in front of a sold out crowd as the Whitecaps looked to maintain their first overall standing in MLS play. Carl Robinson went with the starting lineup that played against Philadelphia last Saturday, with the only exceptions being Steven Beitashour returning to the starting lineup at right back after recovering from injury and Christian Techera earned his first MLS start on the right of midfield replacing Mauro Rosales, who he replaced early on in last Saturday’s match.
Seattle would get on the board first after only five minutes, with Clint Dempsey finding Chad Barrett behind the Vancouver defence and poking home the ball past an onrushing David Ousted to give Seattle the early lead.
Vancouver would almost respond a couple minutes later as Pedro Morales would dribble into the box from the right and unleash a shot that Seattle keeper Stefan Frei just managed to tip over the bar.
The Whitecaps would control the run of play from then on, generating a number of chances towards goal but not really testing Stefan Frei.
Matias Laba would earn a yellow card for a trip in midfield on 28 minutes as Seattle started to gain a spell of possession midway through the half.
In the 37th minute, as Pedro Morales was changing his boots on the sideline, the Sounders would score again through Chad Barrett, who took a pass to David Ousted’s right and shot across goal, behind Ousted and into the net to give Seattle a 2-0 lead.
Seattle would go into the half up 2-0, and a number of Whitecaps players would talk to the officials as they left the pitch at half.
The Whitecaps would get the first good chance on goal in the 2nd half as Octavio Rivero put a header towards goal but Stefan Frei would keep it out.
In the 60th minute Darren Mattocks would come in for Christian Techera as the Whitecaps continued their search for a goal. Right after that David Ousted was forced into a save from Marco Pappa.
The Whitecaps would make their 2nd substitution a few minutes later as Gershon Koffie came in for Russell Teibert.
In the 71st minute goal scorer Chad Barrett came off for Andy Rose, getting a warm reception from the number of Sounders fans in attendance at BC Place.
In the 75th minute Kianz Froese came on for Kekuta Manneh as the Whitecaps continued to search for a goal.
In the 85th minute Darwin Jones came on for Lamar Neagle as Seattle continued to effectively kill off the match.
As the match entered added time David Ousted was forced to make a save on first Darwin Jones then on Marco Pappa. Pappa would then come off for Leonardo Gonzalez as Seattle looked to see the match out.
The Whitecaps had no answer for Seattle today as the Sounders expertly killed off the match in the 2nd half and will need to go back to the drawing board. Next up is a trip to Edmonton on Wednesday in a match they must win in order to advance in the Canadian Championship as the tie is all even at 1-1 after the first leg.
