Richmond is the latest Metro Vancouver city looking at what can be done about the problem of vacant and monster homes.
“Young people can’t afford to buy a house anymore because there’s a shortage of houses and yet we have all these empty houses all around the community. So we’re trying to find out who owns them and what we can do about it.”
Councillor Harold Steves says like Vancouver, they’re looking at how many homes are vacant and why.
He says council also wants to reign in people pushing the size limits.
“Bylaws allow two-and-a-half story houses and we’ve suddenly found over the last two years that they’re building houses that are three storeys tall”
Steves says perhaps they need a huge demololition fee to deter tear downs.
While this may frustrate developers, he says many residents have had enough.
