UBC’s Aboriginal Admissions MD program has breezed past a major milestone five years ahead of schedule.
13 years ago they wanted to see 50 more graduates by 2020.
Associate Dean of Admissions Dr. Bruce Fleming says a major key to the program’s success is reaching out across the province with ‘Pre-Admission Workshops’.
“Encouraging them to finish high school, encouraging them to take the courses at the University level that will allow them to move forward and consider a career in medicine.”
“So many want to go into go into those very areas where we feel they’re most needed, and that these days is in primary care and in generalist specialties.”
He says the majority of graduates decide to become family doctors.
According to Dr. Fleming, there are 35 First Nations students currently enrolled across the province, and he expects all of them to finish their undergraduate degree.
