With yet another province taking steps to ensure students at all schools can set up Gay-Straight Alliance clubs, one Vancouver MLA is questioning why the BC government won’t follow suit.
Spencer Chandra-Herbert is again taking the BC Liberals to task over a refusal to guarantee LGBTQ kids can set up support groups at their schools – even if it’s a religious one.
“Alberta acted, they were a conservative government. Ontario acted. They are a Liberal government. New Democrats are calling for action in Saskatchewan. Their Conservative-affiliated government is looking to cut the funding.”
But Education Minister Peter Fassbender insists, special rules aren’t needed.
“No person, for any reason in this province should be discriminated against or bullied.”
Chandra-Herbert says it’s not enough, because gay-straight alliances in schools cut suicide rates among gay and trans kids in half.
