A teenager from Moncton, N.B., is fighting back against the detention placed on her, so what did she do wrong? She wore a dress that the faculty considered “distracting,” because it showed off her back and shoulders, as well as her bra straps.
Lauren Wiggins was asked to change by her principal, which she refused to do, instead writing a letter to him, and posting about the ordeal on her Facebook account. The post has upwards of 200 likes and over 550 shares, and Lauren said the following along with it:
Today I received a detention because the outfit I am wearing is considered inappropriate and a sexual distraction to the young men in my school. Enough is enough. I’m tired of the unjust standards that we as women are held up to. I’m tired of the discrimination against our bodies, and I’m absolutely fed up with comments that make us feel like we can’t be comfortable without being provocative. It’s time to change the worlds mindset. Now.
Simi Sara addressed the incident this morning on her show.
Opinions about the incident vary from supportive to dismissive of the incident.
Again, women being held resp 4 men’s behaviour! School is teaching boys that it will be girls’ fault 4 boys’ actions! – @RenaMarsland
Shoulders are not an inherently sexual body part. I support Wiggins in her challenging the unjust dress code. – @AndrewGMC
Entitled teens nowadays. Stop trying to make it about rape culture. – @Ambientdownpour
Teenager feels she’s being singled out after breaking the rules & getting punished? I’ve never HEARD of such outrage! – @SteveKarmazenuk
Do you think school administrators need a reality check, or are dress codes in place for a reason?
