A lot of people were expecting another El Classico of Spanish super-powers in the UEFA Champions League of Football/soccer Final in Berlin.
FC Barcelona did their part yesterday by dispatching Bayern Munich and former Barca coach Pep Guardiola.
Today in Madrid, the defending champs from Real were trying to get one step closer to winning the Cup in consecutive years, which has not been done since the Champions League format was instituted 22 years ago.
Juventus spoiled the party. The Italian crew took a 2-1 lead into today and scratched out a 1-1 draw at Real Madrid to advance to the final by a 3-2 aggregate score.
Now before bailing on the big game, there are already some decent storylines.
Juve captain Gigi Buffon, the longtime Italian international goalkeeper has never won the Champions League final. The 37-year-old has won the World Cup in the same Olympic Stadium with the Azzurri in 2006. Remember the Zinedine Zidane head butt on Italy’s Marco Materazzi.
Juventus also features another Italian international defender in Giorgio Chiellini. You may remember almost a year ago, Chiellini’s shoulder was being chomped on by Uruguay’s Luis Suarez at the World Cup in Brazil.
Suarez toils for Barca, the striker/cannibal could order nice Chianti and reunite or make that reu-bite with Chiellini.
It should be mentioned Barcelona feature arguably the top player in the world not named Cristiano Ronaldo in wee Argentine Lionel Messi.
The Champions League final will still be a must see match on Saturday June 6.
