The owners of a now-shuttered Surrey grocery store will have to pay $16,000 to a former employee, who claims he was bullied and attacked with gay slurs.
The BC Human Rights Tribunal has found Buy-Rite Foods and owners Shingara, Sutej and Inder Sumal severely mistreated Kyle Garneau, a long-time former employee with a diagnosed brain disorder, based on his disibility and perceived sexual orientation.
Garneau told the Tribunal he was the target unprovoked homophobic, verbal abuse, so hurtful, it left him with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
He’s had difficulty holding down a job since.
The Sumals didn’t attend the hearings, and they didn’t file any statements in response.
