The NFL smacked Tom Brady and the New England Patriots yesterday for their role in the Deflate Gate Fiasco that enveloped the league during last year’s AFC Championship and leading into the Super Bowl.
A four game suspension for Brady, a one million dollar fine and the loss of two draft picks for the Pats. There are some out there who are quick to jump on the NFL for not being tough enough on domestic violence and other acts that have occurred off the field, and the NFL due to their inability to properly respond to this have taken a hammering in the press for those transgressions.
This is different and you cannot compare a penalty of domestic violence against cheating in the game. Is DV worse, without question, and the NFL are slow learners, but this deflation of the footballs is bad on two fronts:
First and foremost, it is a violation of the INTEGRITY of the game. Yes the NFL is having an integrity issue these days, but this affects the ACTUAL game. If you can’t keep the uniformity on the basic principles of the game, such as the football, then you have a problem, and ultimately it will affect the NFL’s revenue stream if left unchecked long enough.
Secondly, the absolute lack of remorse or cooperation of the New England Patriots, Brady and the individuals named in the report that deflated the balls. New England screamed blue bloody murder when these allegations were levelled, and now it has been made clear by the NFL that Brady or the two flunkies were not forthright or transparent in their responses to the league’s inquiries.
You try to cheat in the game, get caught and then don’t own it; that is a recipe for disaster. The NFL was right to suspend Tom Brady and I for one am happy they did. Not because he beat the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, but because after all is said and done, he attempted to cheat the game that has given him EVERYTHING. For that there is no defense and he will now be perceived by anyone outside of the New England area as a cheater.
Add that to your legacy Tom.
