With discussion swirling about some Port Metro Vancouver workers and their affiliations to groups like the Hells Angels, one criminologist says trying to modify the hiring process is complex.
Dr. Robert Gordon with SFU says the hiring process at Port Metro Vancouver – or at any other port – requires balance between different groups.
That includes Canadian Border Services, the Port and the Longshoreman’s Union.
“Management might well want to see a particular kind of scrutiny take place as may well government – and of course the docks are Federal, but they’d be countered by union – I hesitate to use the word ‘protectionism,’ but that’s what it is.”
According to a report by The Vancouver Sun’s Kim Bolan, over two dozen of the longshoreman are Hell’s Angels or have serious criminal records.
