Justice was swift for a Vancouver man linked to an international drug bust, which involved heroin from Afghanistan ending up in Canada.
RCMP Inspector Cal Chrustie says the only Canadian among the 28 people arrested is already behind bars.
“Jimmy Nico, 52 years of age, a Vancouver resident, formerly of Tanzania, is currently serving a 15-year sentence in South Africa alongside two other non-Canadians who received the same sentence.”
Chrustie says, although only 37 kilograms of heroin were seized, police have successfully kept at least one organized crime group from selling Afghan heroin in Vancouver.
‘We identified a network with some Vancouver-based targets and others outside Canada as well, so our focus was not just on local ones that you may have familiarity with, but others beyond our borders.’
The network extended to South Africa and Belgium before the heroin was moved to Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.
This investigation was launched in June of 2013.
