A Central B.C. First Nation says mercury contamination of trout they’ve relied on for millennia is more extensive than previously thought, adding the Site C dam will make a bad situation even worse.
Moberly Lake Chief Roland Wilson brought a couple of coolers full of contaminated fish to the legislature on Monday, blaming the construction of the WAC Bennett dam.
“The bull trout that we have here are the fish, these are our salmon. They are full of mercury.”
Wilson says the new test results confirm the folly of building Site C, another megadam on the Peace River.
“They don’t need to flood that valley in order to create this energy. This is a stupid idea, this is a $9-billion mistake that the province of British Columbia is going to pay for.”
Wilson says BC Hydro should rely on geothermal or gas-fired power instead of a third Peace River dam.
