A recent study shows 81% of Canadians have witnessed or experienced homophobia in sports.
The study, funded by the Canadian institute of heath research, polled more than 900 youth.
UBC professor Elizabeth Saewyc says the survey was geared toward trans and gendered variant youth.
“We saw really high numbers of youth in the study who experienced really high numbers of discrimination because of their gender identity in the past year.”
She says many young people don’t have anyone to turn to.
“There was at least one in three who didn’t feel like they had anyone in their family or outside their family that they could talk to about their problems. Trans and gender diverse youth also may need more specialized health services or at least knowledgeable providers.”
Saewyc says three out of the four also reported self harming in the past year.
