Reports on social media suggest a 19 year old woman feared to be one of the homicide victims in the Fraser Valley suffered from chronic pain.
Pain specialists say patients can feel isolated and families helpless in this situation.
“It’s a really massive impact. The kinds of psychological impacts can be pretty extreme.”
Pain Specialist Dr. Brenda Lau says chronic pain can have an isolating effect on individuals suffering.
“We’ve had people where, when they can’t cope they will resort to addictions, getting drugs off the street, even harming themselves to the point of suicide.”
Lau says many of her patients don’t know where to go for help.
“Family or friends alike, they feel absolutely helpless to help solve or make the pain different.”
Police have not confirmed whether chronic pain was a factor or identities of the individuals involved.
