A local women’s advocate says she’s not surprised a UK protein powder ad asking, “Are you beach body ready?” has caused viral outrage.
Raw Beauty Talks’ Erin Trealor says the model in the ad isn’t what has people angry.
Speaking on the Jill Bennett Show, she says it’s the industry’s focus on a single body type.
“It’s really more a matter of encouraging brands and companies to produce marketing material that showcases a more diverse range of bodies and women.”
Treloar says the way the Protein World ads shamed women’s bodies struck a nerve.
“When we see an ad like that and it asks the question, and we don’t look like that, it can be very anxiety inducing. And we know summer’s just around the corner and we have this moment of, ‘oh my gosh, I’m not there, I don’t look like that, can I go to the beach this summer?'”
Anger about the campaign lit up social media and sparked an online petition with nearly 70,000 signatures.
On Thursday, Britain’s advertising watchdog said it is investigating the ads.
The company has since pulled the campaign.
