The question about grow ops and their place in the Whonnock community is still burning hot in Maple Ridge.
Mayor Nicole Read has been in touch with Health Canada asking them to make locations of prospective medical marijuana producers public.
Read says the problem stems from the Whonnock application – she thinks residents should have been consulted before it was approved.
“It’s going to be on a well and the residents are extremely afraid it’s going to impact the water in the aquifer.”
But were it any other farm – Read says she wouldn’t request the locations be made public.
“I understand the ALC’s perspective that you know what, this is a farm. But we don’t require the same level of security on greenhouse growing tomatoes as we’re asking for from these facilities.”
“They had no idea that this was going to be built next door to them in this residential neighbourhood. So we really are concerned about the lack of public engagement.”
When she wrote to Health Canada, April 21st there were 13 applications — but now the list is down to 8.
