We’re hearing for the first time how the City of Vancouver plans to grant licences to marijuana shops, and it won’t be an easy process.
Before however the city moves forward granting any licences, the public will get a say, with hearings at later dates.
City Manager Penny Ballem says shops will be approved by a rigorous points system.
Right now she says there are 85 marijuana-related shops across Vancouver with most on the Downtown Eastside.
“We’ve come in to try and bring some order to this situation to try and address some of the identified concerns, and also to protect access to people who need this for their well-being.”
Licences will cost $30,000 and any new shops will have to apply for a development permit.
