A local transgender rights activist says Bruce Jenner’s candid interview – coming out as transgender – could be a big moment for the U.S.
But Morgane Oger says it likely carries less weight in Canada. She says attitudes towards trans people are generally more open north of the border.
But she adds those who are still resistant are will be difficult to convince.
“The social conservative element Canadian society that are hard set against including transgendered persons in their lives and normalizing their existence – it’s not going to be one more trans person showing that they are a normal person that’s going to change their mind.”
“The United States is a significantly more conservative country than Canada is. And for a mainstream broadcaster to do this means the mainstream mindset in the U.S. must be changing, and that’s really welcome.”
Oger says she thinks the interview was tasteful – and could be the beginning of a cultural shift in America.
