A former member of the VPD anti-gang squad says it’s not enough for the RCMP to bring in more school liaison officers to combat the city’s gun violence problem.
Lieutenant Colonel Harjit Sajjan, who is now on leave from the Canadian Forces and running for the federal Liberals, says while education works, mentorship helps steer kids away from gang life.
“You need a mentor that’s already been in that lifestyle, that had the credibility,” he told CKNW’s Simi Sara, “and says ‘Let me tell you what the reality’s really like,’ right?”
Sajjan says other mentors who can help are successful people that come from similar life situations, and celebrities, like hockey players.
