The latest carrot being dangled by the ‘yes’ side in Metro Vancouver’s plebiscite is a reminder the proposed transit tax is ‘critical’ for ‘securing’ federal money for infrastructure upgrades.
The warning comes hours before the federal budget is expected to include major funding for transit improvements.
We’ve been told the zero-point-five per cent increase to the provincial sales tax only covers a third of the cost for projects including the Broadway SkyTrain extension, a new Pattullo Bridge and Light Rail in Surrey.
The rest of the money would have to come from Ottawa and the provincial government.
Mayor’s Council Chair Gregor Robertson says a federal program called the Building Canada Fund already contains more than a billion dollars for BC, but Metro Vancouver is competing with Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa for another five-billion.
Mail-in ballots must be sent to Elections BC before 8pm May 29th.
