It was the lottery heard round the hockey world, and once again the Edmonton Oilers somehow made chicken salad out of chicken…you know the rest.
For the ninth straight year, Edmonton was not a playoff team and over that time they have had the privilege of picking #1 overall three times, and now they can make it four.
At the end of this rainbow isn’t some sure fire #1 overall draft pick like Taylor Hall, or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins or even Nail Yakupov, it is a generational player by the name of Connor McDavid.
If you haven’t heard of McDavid, then welcome back to civilization. There were teams this year, Buffalo and Arizona to be exact, that dumped their seasons to have a chance to draft this kid that has had better stats than Sidney Crosby did when he was in junior.
This kid has the play making ability of Crosby, the skating of Bobby Orr and the hockey IQ of Gretzky, or so the scouts have said. No pressure at all though right?
McDavid will now be the player that will be in charge of rebuilding the Oilers and rekindling the love of the Edmonton faithful. A new building in two years will now get a season ticket boost as the Oil get to bring in the best young player in the last decade, and with it they will be able to retool their existing team by trading some assets that they currently have. A Taylor Hall on the open market could generate a bounty for the Oilers, who need help in every area.
Edmonton was just thrown a lifeline and Sportsnet also must be doing cartwheels as well. One year into a 12 year, 5 Billion dollar TV deal and the numbers haven’t been stellar.
Expect to see a lot more Oiler games nationally for the years to come, and it will be well worth it.
