European Union leaders are set to host an emergency summer on Tuesday to talk about the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean.
At least 900 people are believed to have died over the weekend, with more boats in distress on Monday.
Mambo Masinda leads the Umoja Operation Compassion Society in Surrey, which assists newcomers to Canada from North Africa.
He says it’s hard for Canadians to understand why migrants risk their lives.
“Deciding to really face death during the immigration journey is worth it,” he says. “Instead of staying there, it is worth trying to reach the north shore and eventually one day get access to food and health.”
