Following the toxic fuel spill into English Bay, the leader of the Federal NDP is calling on the Harper Government to re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard Base.
“Well if that Coast Guard station had have been there, it would have been about a seven minute response time.”
That’s NDP Leader Tom Mulcair on where he says Vancouver’s spill response fell down. And he says it’s a problem the NDP wants to solve.
“In the coming week in parliament in Ottawa, the NDP will be presenting a motion calling on the government to reinstate the Kitsilano coast guard station.”
He says last week’s spill was a wake-up call, and having the base active would have meant a much quicker response.
“We saw that the fuel was allowed to simply accumulate, it was dangerous, nothing was done about it for quite a long time. And that’s a small spill compared to what can actually take place. So it’s just a warning right now, that we’ve got to start taking this seriously”
Mulcair says Mulcair says if elected the NDP will reopen the base — a promise the Liberal party has already made.
