Parents need to proactively talk to their kids about sharing photos online, of themselves AND others.
That’s the message from the group MediaSmarts, after dozen senior students at Surrey’s Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary were disciplined for exchanging “inappropriate” photos.
Matthew Johnson is with the non-profit that helps adults talk to kids about online activity.
He says the conversations need to begin early, as soon as kids have contact with digital technology.
“Really, even from the very beginning we can talk to kids about thinking carefully about sharing information about yourself, particularly things like photos, and even more importantly, thinking carefully about the effect it may have if you share other peoples’ content.”
Surrey RCMP say they are investigating the situation at Lord Tweedsmuir.
