India’s prime minister arrived at a downtown Vancouver hotel tonight as a small group of protesters staged a rally outside the entrance lobby.
It was the final stop in a busy day of events in Vancouver and Surrey.
Protesters outside the Pinnacle Hotel demanded Narendra Modi address his human rights record.
Meanwhile, inside, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper touted a stronger partnership with India.
“Make no mistake, the government of Canada and Canadians overwhelmingly support, and it will always stand by the unity and the strength of India and the world.”
Harper also praised Modi.
“We are honoured by the presecne of one of the world’s great leaders, he last year became Prime Minister of India, the world’s largest democracy.”
Speaking through an interpreter, Modi says a comprehensive economic partnership agreement will happen soon.
“I believe this visit is successful, although India and Canada have so much in common, we were not in each other’s thoughts for so many years.”
Earlier in the day, the Prime Ministers visited a Sikh temple in Vancouver, and a Hindu temple in Surrey.
