A nurse at a psychiatric facility in Kamloops was brutally assaulted last night.
The President of the BC Nurses Union Gayle Duteil says it is the second such assault on a nurse in as many months.
“It is unacceptable and it cannot continue. The fact that another nurse has been hurt while trying to provide safe patient care underscores the absolute urgent need to make work sites safer. I have spoken to the nurse, I am friends with the nurse, and she is devastated.”
Duteil says the nurse was injured protecting herself from an atacking patient.
“She is recovering at home and recieving the appropriate medical care.”
Duteil says the Hillside Centre facility is one of four the nurses union had already identified as needing immediate attention.
“We are not waiting until next week we are going tomorrow. It is a horrendous psychiatric facility.”
Health minister Terry Lake says he is very concerned and wants an immediate review.
Duteil says the health minister, the union, and the health authority will be paying the Kamloops facility a visit.
“Tomorrow myself and the minister will be attending the site with the health authority. We will be talking with the nurses and with the staff. We have put forward many suggestions in the past. It is not a one size fits all I understand that. This nurse did have the required code white training. However it was still an unprovoked and unanticipated assault.”
