Poor voter turnout for Metro Vancouver’s transit tax has the mayor of New Westminster wondering: why?
“The mayors have done a good job and the best they can to get the information out there and ultimately, it’s up to the people to get out and return their ballots.”
Jonathan Cote says efforts are being made to help anyone still waiting for a ballot.
“To get out information about calling Elections BC if they haven’t received a ballot, even if you have not received a ballot, there are other mechanisms to do that.”
Cote says New West was one of the last communities on the mail-out list and the city has lots of rental housing, so tenants who move often may be difficult to track down.
Region-wide, only 15 per cent of the 1.6-million eligible voters have returned their ballots.
