We’ve heard about the “man cave.”
Researchers at UBC think more “men’s sheds” should be built in Metro Vancouver.
Nursing professor John Oliffe says the community sheds get men together who would otherwise just stay home, getting them to take part in activities with other men, like woodworking, gardening, cooking or bike repair.
Oliffe says it’s an issue for seniors and retirees who may end up isolated, which increases risk of depression and suicide.
“We know if guys can connect with one another over doing activities, it can really aid their mental health, give them an interest, give them a routine, and allow them to sort of connect and stay well.”
The idea comes from Australia, where the government has bought into the men’s shed idea.
In B.C., there are several in the Okanagan that have seen success.
