A group called BC Parents of Special Needs Children say the public education system is failing their kids and they want a meeting with the minister.
Spokesperson Karen Copeland says half of the 236 parents they surveyed say its so bad they have taken their kids out of school entirely.
Copeland says the school system’s lack of supports for special needs children has a real impact on the kids.
It was actually quite appalling to us that 65% of the people that responded indicated that the number one reason for thinking of removing their child, or that they had already removed their child, was because of a deterioration around their children’s mental health. So an icnrease in anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and post traumatic stress disorder.”
Copeland says it is not just the kids who are impacted.
“We have families that have been told that their kids can only attend half days or part days. We have families that are getting calls they have to come pick up their kids from schools because there is not support for their child to be in the classroom or the school environment. So that adds to the stress of parenting.”
A letter has been sent to Education minister Peter Fassbender asking for a meeting.
